How much does pressure washer repair cost in Virginia?

There is no standard Virginia price. A clean nozzle or inlet screen costs nothing, filters, plugs and fresh fuel are cheap, and a worn or freeze-damaged pump is the costly repair. Check your warranty, then get an itemized written estimate with the diagnostic fee and parts and labor listed separately.

Free to ask. Local shops send quotes, and you pay only when you book one.

Step by step

Read when to stop and call a pro, further down this page, before you start.

  1. Step 1: Note the model and symptom

Write down the make, model number and what the machine does or does not do, so every shop quotes the same job.

  2. Step 2: Make it safe

Shut the engine off, turn off the water, squeeze the trigger to relieve pressure and, on a gas machine, disconnect the spark plug wire before checking anything.[1]

  3. Step 3: Clear the nozzle and inlet screen

A clogged nozzle can make the pump pulsate, so clean it and the screen before paying a diagnostic fee.[1]

  4. Step 4: Check the warranty

Look up your pump, frame, accessory and engine coverage and who is authorized to repair it.[1]

  5. Step 5: Ask for an itemized written estimate

Request the diagnostic fee, parts and labor separately, and a call before the cost goes above the estimate.

  6. Step 6: Compare with a new machine

Ask what a comparable new machine costs and how long the shop's repair is warranted, then decide.

There is no standard price for pressure washer repair in Virginia. Shops set their own rates and diagnostic fees, and no source we found publishes a dated Virginia figure, so a number here would be a guess. What you can know is what moves the bill, which repairs are cheap and which are not, and how to get a written estimate you can compare.

What drives the bill

Which part failed. A clogged nozzle or inlet screen costs nothing to fix. Consumables such as the fuel filter, air filter, spark plug, recoil starter rope and oil are cheap parts and a short job. Simpson's warranty lists them as consumable parts, and lists carburetor cleaning and engine oil draining as normal periodic maintenance.[1] A pump with worn seals or packing, or a new engine, is a larger job.

Engine or pump. A gas pressure washer is two machines: a small engine and a high-pressure pump. A shop that fixes the engine may not rebuild pumps, and the reverse. Ask who does which, and whether the work is done in house.

Old fuel. Fuel trouble is a common reason a machine that sat all winter will not run. Simpson says alcohol-blended fuels attract moisture, which leads to separation and the formation of acids during storage, and that acidic fuel and gum deposits can damage the engine's fuel system.[1] Penn State Extension adds that engines that are rarely or seasonally used are especially prone to difficulties with ethanol-blended gasoline.[2] Draining the old fuel and refilling is nearly free. A gummed-up carburetor that has to come apart is labor.

Freeze damage. This is the expensive one. Simpson says leaving water inside the pump during freezing weather will cause severe damage to the pump.[1] A cracked pump head can cost enough to make replacing the machine the better choice.

Hoses and fittings. Simpson says never to attempt to repair a high-pressure hose,[1] so a leaking hose means a new hose.

Shop charges. Ask whether there is a diagnostic or bench fee and whether it is credited toward the repair, plus any pickup, storage or parts-ordering charges. Ask about turnaround too.

Try the free fixes first

Many "broken" pressure washers need only a clean nozzle or screen. Simpson says if a nozzle becomes clogged, the pump may pulsate and the spray pattern could change.[1] Step-by-step cleaning is in how to fix a pressure washer that will not build pressure. Two minutes of that before you drop the machine off can save a diagnostic fee.

Check the warranty before you pay anyone

Warranties differ by brand, so read yours. As one example, Simpson's commercial limited warranty covers the high-pressure pump for five years from the date of purchase, the frame for ten, and accessories such as nozzles, hoses and spray guns for ninety days.[1] The same warranty excludes freeze damage and normal wear, and says it does not cover damage from repairs or alterations performed by non-factory authorized personnel.[1] If your machine is still in warranty, a repair at an unauthorized shop can cost you the coverage. The engine usually has its own separate warranty from the engine maker.[1]

Getting an estimate you can compare

Give each shop the make, model and what the machine does or does not do. Ask for:

  • the diagnostic fee, and whether it comes off the repair
  • parts and labor itemized separately
  • whether parts are new, aftermarket or used
  • a written estimate before work starts, and a call if the cost will go above it
  • what warranty the shop gives on the repair

Stop and call a pro if

  • The pump leaks water or oil, or surges after the nozzle is clean. The pump is a job for a shop.
  • A high-pressure hose or fitting leaks. Do not touch the leak.[1]
  • The engine will not start after fresh fuel, a clean filter and a new plug. The carburetor or ignition needs a check.
  • The machine froze with water in it. Have the pump inspected before running it.

Common questions

Is there a standard price for pressure washer repair in Virginia?
No. Shops set their own labor rates and diagnostic fees. Get a written, itemized estimate, and ask two shops if the repair is a large one.
What are the cheapest pressure washer repairs?
Cleaning the nozzle and the inlet screen, replacing the spark plug, air filter or fuel filter, and draining stale fuel. Simpson lists the filters, spark plug, recoil rope and oil as consumable parts.
What is the most expensive thing that goes wrong?
A damaged pump. Simpson says water left in the pump in freezing weather will cause severe damage, and its warranty excludes freeze damage.
Should I use the manufacturer's service center?
If the machine is in warranty, yes. Simpson's warranty does not cover damage from repairs or alterations by non-factory authorized personnel. Out of warranty, any competent small engine shop can work on the engine, but ask whether it rebuilds pumps.
