How much do local movers cost in Virginia?

There is no state price list for a local move. Virginia does not make movers file rates for moves under 31 road miles, so the price is whatever the company quotes, usually driven by crew size, hours, travel time, stairs and long carries, packing, and specialty items. Longer in-state moves must follow the rates in a tariff filed with DMV. Get written quotes on the same inventory.

Step by step

Read when to stop and call a pro, further down this page, before you start.

  1. Step 1: Make one inventory

List the rooms, the large pieces, the approximate number of boxes and anything heavy or fragile, and send the same list to every mover.

  2. Step 2: Describe both buildings

Note stairs, elevators, long walks from the truck, narrow doors and where the truck can park at each end.

  3. Step 3: Decide who packs

Say whether you will pack everything yourself, want the mover to pack some rooms, or want full packing, since packing labour and boxes are billed.

  4. Step 4: Ask how the price is built

Ask for the hourly rate and crew size, the minimum hours, how travel time is charged, and every surcharge by name.

  5. Step 5: Ask for a written estimate

Get the estimate on paper with the company's name, address and phone number, the items and services covered, and the payment terms.

  6. Step 6: Ask about coverage

Ask what the company pays if an item is lost or broken, and whether better coverage is available for a fee.

  7. Step 7: Compare like with like

Line the quotes up by crew size, estimated hours, travel charge, materials and coverage before looking at the total.

There is no standard price for a local move in Virginia, because the state does not set or publish one. DMV's property carrier permit, which covers household goods moves of less than 31 road miles, lists no tariff requirement,[1] so each company sets its own prices. What you pay comes down to how many people work for how long, how hard your two buildings are to work in, and what extra services you add. The way to get a reliable number is to give several movers the same detailed inventory and compare written estimates line by line.

What drives the price of a local move

Most local movers price by the hour for a crew and a truck, though some quote a flat price for a defined job. Either way, the same things push the number up or down:

  • Crew size and hours. A larger crew costs more per hour but often finishes sooner. The hours depend on how much you own and how ready it is when the crew arrives.
  • Travel time. Many movers charge for the drive from their yard to you and back, either as time or as a flat trip fee.
  • Access. Stairs, a slow elevator, a long walk from the nearest parking spot, narrow doors and tight turns all add time.
  • Packing. Packing labour and materials are billed separately. Boxes packed and taped before the crew arrives save money.
  • Heavy or awkward items. Pianos, safes, large aquariums, treadmills and oversized furniture often carry a surcharge or need a specialty mover.
  • Taking furniture apart. Disassembling and reassembling beds, cribs, desks and sectionals takes crew time.
  • Timing. Popular dates can book up early. Ask whether a weekday or mid-month date costs less.
  • Coverage. Ask what the company pays if something is lost or broken, and what better coverage costs.

A minimum charge is common, so a very small move can cost close to the same as a moderate one. If your load is only a few pieces, compare a mover's minimum against a furniture delivery or junk removal crew; see how much furniture removal costs in Virginia.

When state pricing rules apply

The detailed pricing rules in the Code belong to longer in-state moves. Household goods carriers moving goods less than thirty-one road miles are exempt from the household goods article of the Code, except its section on claims.[2] Once a move inside Virginia goes past that distance, the rules tighten.

For deliveries over 30 miles, DMV says the carrier must charge the rates in the tariff it filed with DMV,[3] and must notify DMV at least 30 days before changing rates and receive written approval.[3] No household goods carrier may collect more for transportation or related services than the rates and charges in the tariffs in effect at the time.[4] Where a tariff prices by weight, note that the Code defines constructive weight as seven pounds per cubic foot of properly loaded van space.[7]

On those longer moves, estimates follow a set form. A written estimate must carry the words "ESTIMATED COST OF SERVICES" across the top in bold type[5] and show the carrier's name, address and phone number.[5] The estimate may be based on a visual inspection of your goods or on information you give the carrier,[5] and a carrier that gives you a written estimate must also give you an information booklet approved by DMV.[5] Estimated charges may be bound so that the price cannot be exceeded, except for accessorial tariff charges at destination that were not known until delivery.[6]

Deposits and paying on the day

A carrier may require prepayment for a specific service, in full or in part,[6] and the carrier does not have to hand over your goods until the tariff charges are paid, unless other arrangements were made.[6] That is the rule for longer in-state moves, but local movers often work the same way in practice. Settle the payment method and timing in writing before moving day, so there is no argument with your furniture still on the truck.

Be wary of insurance promises in advertising. A household goods carrier may not advertise that "all loads are insured" unless it has filed tariffs with DMV assuming complete liability and filed evidence of insurance covering every shipment to its full value.[8] Ask what the company will actually pay per item.

How to get an accurate quote

The best protection against a surprise bill is a detailed inventory and a written estimate. Walk the mover through the home in person or by video when you can; a price given without seeing anything is a guess. Ask each company the same questions, then compare crew size, estimated hours, travel charge, materials and coverage before the total.

Also check the company's DMV authority before you book; see whether movers need a license in Virginia. For getting ready, see how to plan a local move.

Stop and call a pro if

  • The move includes a piano, a safe, a pool table or anything over a few hundred pounds. Ask for a specialty mover's quote instead of a general crew's guess.
  • A company will only give a price over the phone with no inventory, or the price is far below the others. Ask what is missing from it.
  • A mover asks for full payment up front with nothing in writing. Keep looking.

Common questions

Does Virginia set the price of a local move?
No. For household goods moves of less than 31 road miles, DMV's property carrier permit has no tariff requirement, so each company sets its own prices. For longer in-state moves, the carrier must charge the rates in the tariff it filed with DMV.
Why do local movers charge for travel time?
The crew and truck are working from the moment they leave the yard, so many movers bill the drive to your home and back, either as hours or as a flat trip fee. Ask how it is charged and compare it across quotes.
Is a binding estimate available for a move inside Virginia?
For longer in-state moves under the household goods rules, the Code allows estimated charges to be bound so the price cannot be exceeded, apart from unknown accessorial charges at destination. For a short local move, ask whether the company offers a fixed price and put it in writing.
Should I pay a deposit to a mover?
Some movers ask for one, and the Code allows prepayment for a specific service on longer in-state moves. Pay a deposit only against a written estimate, by a method you can trace, and ask whether it is refundable if you cancel.
Is it cheaper to rent a truck and hire loading help?
Often, for a small move, because you pay for labour by the hour and drive the truck yourself. You also take on the driving, the fuel, the truck rental and more of the risk, so ask the loading crew what insurance it carries.
