How much does oven repair cost in Virginia?

There is no single Virginia price for oven repair, and no dated source we could quote. A bill is a service-call fee, the part and the labor, and what failed matters most. Get at least three itemized written quotes for your model, and for a gas oven make sure the technician is licensed for gas work.

Free to ask. Local shops send quotes, and you pay only when you book one.

This is a job for a licensed pro in Virginia

This page explains what the work involves, the permits, what a licensed pro does and what drives the cost. It does not give step-by-step instructions, because this work needs a licence, a permit or both, and doing it wrong can injure someone. Before you hire, check the licence on Virginia's DPOR record.

There is no single Virginia price for oven repair, and we could not find a dated Virginia price source to quote, so this page gives you the cost drivers and how to get a quote that holds. In practice a bill is a service-call fee, the part and the labor, and what failed matters most: a simple fix costs far less than a new control board or a gas valve.

What drives the bill

What failed. An igniter, a temperature sensor, a heating element, a door latch, an oven control board and a gas safety valve all fail in ovens, and they differ a lot in part price and in the time needed to fit them. The diagnosis decides which you have, not a phone guess.

Gas or electric. A gas oven has a gas side and an electric side. Work on the gas side is licensed work in Virginia, which narrows the field of who can quote it. See who can repair a gas range in Virginia.

The age and make of the range. Parts for an older or less common model may need to be ordered, which can mean a second visit and a second charge.

The visit itself. Many businesses charge a service-call or diagnostic fee. Ask what it is and whether it comes off the repair if you go ahead.

Rule out the free fixes first

Before you pay for a visit, check what GE's support guidance for gas ovens checks first. It says to "Check the house fuse or circuit breaker box to be sure the breakers are ON or that the fuses are good."[1] It also says to reset electronic controls by turning the circuit breaker off for one minute and back on,[1] to make sure a self-clean door latch is all the way to the left in the unlocked position, and to check whether the oven is in Sabbath Mode on models that have it.[1]

If the oven still does not work, GE's advice is to schedule a repair appointment.[1]

Get a quote you can compare

The Virginia Board for Contractors advises you to "get at least three written bids or estimates using identical plans and specifications so you can compare prices and contractors."[2] For an oven repair, "identical" means giving each business the same details: the make, model and serial number, whether it runs on gas or electricity, and exactly what the oven does or fails to do. Then ask each one:

  • What is the service-call or diagnostic fee, and is it credited if you go ahead?
  • What are the part, the labor and any other charge, listed separately?
  • Is the part new or refurbished, and what warranty covers the part and the labor?
  • If the part has to be ordered, how long will it take, and is a second visit charged?

The Board also notes that "A reputable contractor should be able to front the costs of supplies without a large sum of up-front money from you."[2] Be wary of a large cash deposit before the oven has even been diagnosed.

What is different about a gas oven

The gas side of a range is not a place to save money. Columbia Gas of Virginia says: "For your safety, a qualified professional should perform all work on natural gas lines and equipment inside the home."[3] A cheaper quote from an unlicensed handyman is not a saving if it leaves a leak.

Virginia's specialty definitions say the gas fitting contracting specialty covers "the installation, repair, improvement, or removal of gas piping and appliances annexed to real property."[4] DPOR says that if the work is valued at $1,000 or more, a valid Virginia contractor's licence is required for the category in which the contractor works,[2] but whatever the size of the repair, the individual doing the gas work needs a licence for it. Ask for it and check it on DPOR's lookup.

Replacement is a different job. Fairfax County, for example, requires a permit for any gas appliance installation or replacement, even like for like,[5] so a new range adds a permit and an inspection to the price. Other localities set their own rules.

Repair or replace

A repair that approaches the price of a new oven on an old range is often not worth making. Our guide on whether to repair or replace a range hood uses the same test, and the same approach works for an oven: compare the written quote against the age of the range, the cost of a new one and how often it has needed work.

When to call a licensed pro

Call a licensed pro for any oven that will not light, any gas smell, and any repair that involves the gas valve, the burner or the gas connections. If you smell gas, Columbia Gas says to "go outside and call 911 and then call us at 1-800-544-5606 (24/7)."[3] For a gas range, the person doing the repair should be a licensed gas fitter. Under the Code of Virginia, no individual may engage in work as a liquefied petroleum gas fitter or natural gas fitter provider unless licensed.[6]

For what the technician actually does, read what a technician does to fix a gas oven that will not light.

Common questions

Why does this page give no prices?
Oven repair prices change with the part, the model and the business, and there is no dated Virginia price source to quote. A written, itemized quote for your own oven is the figure that counts.
Should I pay a diagnostic fee?
Often a fee is normal because a technician travels and tests. Ask beforehand how much it is and whether it comes off the repair if you proceed.
How many quotes should I get?
The Virginia Board for Contractors advises at least three written bids or estimates. For a small repair that may be two calls; for a gas valve or control board, get all three.
Is a gas oven repair more expensive than an electric one?
It can be, because the gas side needs a technician licensed for gas work and a leak check afterwards. What failed still matters more than the fuel.
Is a permit needed for an oven repair?
Replacing a gas appliance can need a permit, and a repair may not; ask your building department which applies. Fairfax County requires a permit for any gas appliance installation or replacement, and other localities set their own rules, so ask your building department.
