How to

How do I rekey a door lock?

On a Kwikset lock with SmartKey you can rekey it yourself in a few minutes: with the door open and the lock locked, turn the old key 90 degrees, press the SmartKey tool in, remove both, then program the new key. Other brands need their pins changed, which is locksmith work, and without a working key you need a locksmith either way.

Cost

How much does a locksmith cost in Virginia?

There is no single Virginia price, and no state fee schedule sets one. A lockout, a rekey, a new deadbolt and a safe job are priced differently, and trip and after-hours charges, the number of locks and the lock type all move the total. Ask for the full price by phone, get larger jobs quoted in writing, and confirm the business is licensed.

Hiring

Do locksmiths need a license in Virginia?

Yes. Virginia requires a private security services business license from the Department of Criminal Justice Services for locksmith work, and individual locksmiths must hold a DCJS registration. Retail key cutting, some contractors, vehicle dealers and towing businesses are exempt if they do not present themselves as locksmiths. Ask for the license number before anyone starts.

Troubleshooting

Why is my key hard to turn in the lock?

A stiff key is usually a dirty or dry lock cylinder, a worn or poorly cut key, or a door that has shifted so the bolt rubs the strike. Try a spare key, test with the door open, blow dust out of the keyway, and add a light PTFE lubricant. Do not use heavy graphite or force a key that sticks.

Upkeep

How do I keep exterior door locks from freezing?

Clean and lightly lubricate the lock before winter, then keep water out of the keyway. Master Lock recommends cleaning and lubricating every 3-6 months, which helps minimize freezing. If a lock does freeze, warm it gently or use a lock deicer. Do not force the key or use an open flame.
