How much does boiler repair cost in Virginia?

Boiler repair has no fixed price, so the bill depends on the diagnosis. You pay for the visit and diagnostic time, then the part and labour, and the part could be an igniter, a sensor, the fan, the main circuit board or the heat exchanger. Warranty coverage can change the bill a lot, so get a written, itemized quote.

Free to ask. Local shops send quotes, and you pay only when you book one.

This is a job for a licensed pro in Virginia

This page explains what the work involves, the permits, what a licensed pro does and what drives the cost. It does not give step-by-step instructions, because this work needs a licence, a permit or both, and doing it wrong can injure someone. Before you hire, check the licence on Virginia's DPOR record.

Boiler repair has no fixed price in Virginia, because each business sets its own. What you pay is a visit and diagnostic charge, then a part and the labour to fit it. The bill turns on which part failed, how long it takes to reach and fit, and whether a warranty covers it. Here is what moves the number, and how to get a quote you can compare.

What you are paying for

The visit and the diagnosis. Ask what the business charges to come out and find the fault, whether that changes at night, at weekends or in a cold snap, and whether it comes off the repair if you go ahead. Diagnosis takes longer on an older boiler with no error display, or on a system with several zones. Our guide to what a technician checks when there is no heat shows what that time covers.

The part. Boiler repairs range widely because the parts do. A single boiler's error chart points to parts as different as the igniter, a thermistor, the fan, the water pressure sensor and the main circuit board[1]. Ask the quote to name the failed part and list its price and its own warranty separately from the labour, so you can see what you are paying for. Some parts are specific to one brand, so availability and shipping time matter too.

The heat exchanger. Replacing a heat exchanger can be costly[10]. Minerals from constant fresh make-up water can build up in the heat exchanger, reduce heat transfer, overheat it and cause it to fail[1]. If the heat exchanger has cracked or leaks on an older boiler, ask for a replacement price alongside the repair price, both in writing.

Labour and access. A wall-hung boiler with clear access is quicker to work on than a cast-iron boiler in a tight crawlspace. Draining and refilling the system, purging air, and testing combustion afterwards all add time.

Warranty can change the bill more than anything else

Check the warranty before you approve a repair. Navien's NHB-H warranty covers parts for 5 years, labour for 1 year and the heat exchanger for 10 years in a single-family home[1]. In years 11 to 15 the heat exchanger cover becomes pro-rated: the owner pays from 30% of the list price in year 11 up to 70% in year 15, and the pro-rated cover does not include labour[1]. The same warranty requires repairs to be done by someone properly licensed for that type of repair, and lists improper maintenance, including scale buildup and vent blockage, among the things that void it[1]. Service records from yearly maintenance help here.

Other makers work similarly. With Weil-McLain, your installer or heating contractor files the claim, the replacement part comes through a Weil-McLain distributor, and Weil-McLain does not reimburse consumers directly[2]. Have the installation date and the serial number ready; on a Weil-McLain boiler, that is the CP number on a barcode sticker on the boiler jacket[2].

Permits and what they add

Virginia's building code requires a permit before installations or alterations involving mechanical systems or fuel supply systems, or any equipment the code regulates[5], and for emergency equipment replacement the application must be submitted by the end of the first working day after the work starts[5]. The code's list of ordinary repairs that need no permit includes other repair work the building official deems minor and ordinary that does not adversely affect public health or general safety[5], so whether a smaller repair needs a permit is the building official's decision. And its exemption for replacing mechanical appliances covers only equipment that is not fueled by gas or oil[5], so a gas or oil boiler replacement does not qualify. Ask your contractor or the local building department which applies to your repair.

Fees are set by each locality. As one example, Spotsylvania County's mechanical permit packet, updated in August 2025, prices a residential trade permit at $100 per trade plus a 2% building surcharge and a $45 processing fee, $147.00 in all[6]. Your county or city may charge differently.

When the repair money is better spent on a new boiler

ENERGY STAR's guidance is that a furnace or boiler more than 15 years old, and equipment that needs frequent repairs while energy bills climb, are signs it may be time to consider replacement[3]. A large repair on an old boiler deserves a side-by-side quote. Our answer on whether to repair or replace a boiler walks through that decision, and what a new boiler costs in Virginia covers the other side of the comparison.

Getting a quote you can compare

ENERGY STAR's advice for hiring heating contractors applies to repairs too: get written, itemized estimates and compare cost, energy efficiency and warranties[4]. A useful repair quote names the failed part, the part's own warranty, the labour, any permit and whether the diagnostic fee is credited.

Virginia's Board for Contractors requires a legible written contract for residential contracting, but routine maintenance or service contracts are excluded[7]. For a bigger repair, get it in writing anyway, with the contractor's name, address, license number, class of license and classifications or specialty services[7]. Every boiler repair needs a licensed tradesman (see below), and the business doing it is licensed as a contractor too: Virginia's smallest contractor class, Class C, covers a single contract or project worth over $1,000 but less than $30,000[8].

On Loclis, a business can quote a repair directly or book a paid service call first, and the service call fee comes off the repair price if you go ahead. See how pricing works.

When to call a licensed pro

Every boiler repair is HVAC work, which Virginia's tradesman rules define to include the repair and maintenance of "steam and hot water heating systems, boilers"[11], and no one may work as a tradesman unless licensed[9]. Call a licensed technician for any repair beyond reading the gauge and noting the error code, and check the business on DPOR's License Lookup[12] before you approve the work. More HVAC repair answers cover the other heating systems.

When you are ready, describe your boiler problem once and compare quotes from licensed technicians.

Common questions

Is there a standard price for a boiler service call in Virginia?
Not a fixed one; each business sets its own. Ask the business what its trip or diagnostic fee is and what it covers, whether it includes the first hour, whether nights and weekends cost more, and whether it comes off the repair if you go ahead.
Does boiler repair need a permit in Virginia?
It depends on the work. The Uniform Statewide Building Code requires a permit for installations or alterations involving mechanical or fuel supply systems, and leaves it to the building official to deem other repair work minor and ordinary. Its exemption for replacing mechanical appliances does not cover gas- or oil-fueled ones, so replacing a gas or oil boiler needs a permit. For a smaller repair, ask your contractor or the local building department.
Will my boiler warranty pay for the repair?
Often for parts, sometimes for labour, and only on the maker's terms. A Navien NHB-H, for example, has 5 years on parts and 1 year on labour in a single-family home, and Weil-McLain warranty claims are filed by your contractor. Have the installation date and serial or CP number ready.
When does a repair stop being worth it?
There is no fixed line. ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement for a furnace or boiler more than 15 years old, or for equipment that needs frequent repairs while energy bills climb. If the heat exchanger has failed outside its warranty, ask for a repair price and a replacement price in writing so you can compare.
Do I need a written contract for a boiler repair?
Virginia's Board for Contractors requires a written contract for residential contracting, but excludes routine maintenance and service contracts. For a large repair, get it in writing anyway: the scope, the parts, the total price and the contractor's licence number.
