Will a mattress store take away my old mattress?
Often, but usually only when the store delivers a new mattress to your home, usually for a fee, and one old piece for each new one. When we checked on October 27, 2026, Mattress Warehouse charged $29.99 a piece and IKEA from $30 for in-store purchases. Stores can refuse a stained mattress, and a mattress shipped in a box often comes with no haul-away.

Step by step
Read when to stop and call a pro, further down this page, before you start.
Step 1: Ask before you pay
Ask the store whether it removes old mattresses, what it charges per piece, and whether removal comes with your delivery method.
Step 2: Add removal at checkout
Book the removal with the order, because stores that offer it tie it to the delivery and may need it added before the delivery date.[1]
Step 3: Count your pieces
Match the old pieces to the new ones, since removal is often one old mattress or box spring for each new one bought.[3]
Step 4: Strip the bed
Take off all sheets, pillows and protectors before the crew arrives, because bedding is not included in the removal.[1]
Step 5: Clear a path
Clear a path from the bedroom to the door and move breakable items out of the way so the crew can carry both mattresses safely.[1]
Step 6: Plan for what stays behind
Arrange a bulk pickup, drop-off or hauler for frames, headboards, adjustable bases or a stained mattress the store will not take.

Many mattress stores will take your old mattress, but almost always as part of delivering a new one to your home. The usual pattern: you add haul-away when you order, pay a fee per piece, the crew takes one old piece for each new one, and a stained mattress can be turned away. A mattress shipped in a box by a parcel carrier often comes with no haul-away at all.
What stores actually offer
Policies differ by store, so read the delivery page or ask at the counter before you pay. Three examples, as we found them when we checked on October 27, 2026:
Mattress Warehouse. Mattress Warehouse removes and recycles an old mattress or box spring for $29.99 per piece during delivery, and the removal has to be added before your delivery date.[1] It covers mattresses and box springs only: bedding is not included, and adjustable bases, bed frames, headboards and other furniture cannot be removed.[1] Its crews will not take a stained mattress because of the potential biohazard risk to the delivery team.[1] The mattresses it removes go to recycling partners, which strip the metal from box springs and innerspring coils and the cotton from mattress padding for reuse.[1]
IKEA. IKEA offers mattress removal starting at $30 when you buy a mattress or box spring in a store with in-home delivery, in select markets.[2] It is not available with online purchases, it is not offered in every zip code, and the pickup may not happen on the same date or at the same time as the delivery.[2]
Casper. Casper's in-home delivery and setup, which costs $249, includes optional removal of a used mattress and box spring, one used mattress for each new mattress and one box spring for each new foundation bought from Casper.[3] The used mattress must be in sanitary condition, as judged by the delivery team on site, a box spring must come out without being broken down, and bed frames are not removed.[3] Casper also sells a separate removal service through a logistics partner for $150 in eligible areas, removing items one for one with what you bought and up to three items per appointment.[3]
Boxed and shipped mattresses
The cheapest delivery is often a mattress rolled in a box and left at your door, and that often means nobody comes inside to take the old one. Mattress Warehouse says setup and debris removal do not apply to orders shipped by UPS or FedEx.[1] If you want haul-away, choose the in-home delivery option, or plan to deal with the old mattress yourself.
Does Virginia require stores to take it?
In California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island, mattress retailers are required to offer to remove a used mattress, futon or box spring when they deliver a new one.[2] Virginia is not one of the states IKEA names, so do not count on a store offering haul-away; ask each one what it offers and charges.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Do you remove old mattresses and box springs, and what is the charge per piece?
- Does removal come with every delivery method, or only in-home delivery?
- Do I have to book it at checkout, and does it happen at the same visit as the delivery?
- How many old pieces will you take for what I am buying?
- Will you take a frame, headboard or adjustable base?
- What condition does the old mattress need to be in?
- Where does it go, and is it recycled?
Getting ready on delivery day
Take off the bedding beforehand; Mattress Warehouse asks customers to remove all sheets and pillows from a mattress that will be hauled away.[1] Clear a path from the bedroom to the front door, move lamps and pictures out of the way, and shut pets in another room. Mattress Warehouse crews will not deliver through windows or over railings.[1] If your old mattress only got upstairs that way, tell the store before delivery day.
If bed bugs are the reason you are replacing the mattress, the EPA says to slash or in some way destroy an infested mattress you throw out so that no one else takes it.[4] Tell the store about the bugs before delivery; a crew may decline, and you should not pass them along. How to check a mattress for bed bugs helps you know for sure.
If the store will not take it
You still have cheap options. Many localities collect mattresses on bulk pickup: in Fairfax County, county collection customers get five free special collections per fiscal year, and a mattress and box spring is on the accepted bulk list.[5] Drop-off is cheap too: Chesterfield County charges $9 per mattress at its convenience centers under fees that took effect July 1, 2026.[6] How to dispose of a mattress in Virginia covers each route, and how much mattress removal costs in Virginia compares the prices.
If you hire a hauler instead, get a written all-in price and ask where the mattress is going. In Fairfax County, refuse collectors must hold a county Certificate to Operate, and the county lists the companies that have one.[7]
Stop and call a pro if
- The store refuses the mattress because of stains or bed bugs and you cannot carry it out safely yourself.
- You also need a frame, headboard or adjustable base removed that the store will not take.
- The old mattress will not come down the stairs or through a door without removing a railing, door or window.

Common questions
- Do mattress stores in Virginia have to take my old mattress?
- IKEA names only California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island as states where retailers must offer removal when they deliver a new mattress, and Virginia is not one of them. Ask each Virginia store whether it offers haul-away and what it charges before you buy.
- Will a store take my old mattress if I bought the new one online?
- Sometimes, but check first. IKEA's mattress removal is not available with online purchases, and Mattress Warehouse says setup and debris removal do not apply to orders shipped by UPS or FedEx. A boxed mattress sent by parcel carrier often comes with no haul-away.
- Can the store take my bed frame too?
- Often not. Mattress Warehouse removes only mattresses and box springs, not adjustable bases, frames or headboards, and Casper's delivery partner does not remove bed frames. Plan a bulk pickup, drop-off or hauler for the frame.
- Will a store take a stained mattress?
- It may refuse. Mattress Warehouse will not remove a stained mattress because of the biohazard risk to its crew, and Casper requires a used mattress to be in sanitary condition. If yours is stained, plan on a bulk pickup, drop-off or hauler instead.
- What does store haul-away cost?
- When we checked on October 27, 2026, Mattress Warehouse charged $29.99 per piece and IKEA started at $30 for in-store purchases with in-home delivery. Casper's $249 in-home delivery included optional removal of one used mattress per new one.
