How much does mattress removal cost in Virginia?

It depends on the route. Some Virginia localities collect a mattress at no extra charge on a scheduled bulk pickup, and drop-off fees are small: when we checked on October 27, 2026, Chesterfield County charged $9 a mattress and Fairfax County $17 a mattress and box spring. Store haul-away ran about $30 a piece. A hired hauler costs more, driven by stairs, pieces and timing.

Step by step

Read when to stop and call a pro, further down this page, before you start.

  1. Step 1: Ask the store before you buy

If a new mattress is coming, ask what haul-away costs and add it at checkout, since stores that offer it book it with the delivery.[7]

  2. Step 2: Check your free bulk pickups

Find out whether your county, city or trash company includes bulk or special collections in the service you already pay for.

  3. Step 3: Price the drop-off

Look up your locality's per-item or per-ton fee and compare it with the cost and time of borrowing or renting a truck.

  4. Step 4: Bundle bulky items

If you are hiring a hauler, add the box spring, frame and any other bulky items to one visit rather than paying for several trips.

  5. Step 5: Get written all-in quotes

Ask two or three haulers for a written price that includes labour, stairs, disposal fees and any minimum charge.

  6. Step 6: Ask where it goes

Ask whether the mattress will be recycled or landfilled, and in Fairfax County check that the company holds the county's Certificate to Operate.[10]

Getting rid of one mattress in Virginia can cost nothing extra, a few dollars at a county drop-off, about $30 through the store delivering your new one, or more for a hired hauler. The price follows the route, so the first question is which routes you have where you live.

Curbside bulk pickup: often included

Some Virginia localities and trash companies pick up a mattress as part of bulk collection you already pay for through taxes, a fee or a hauler's bill.

  • Fairfax County. In Fairfax County, county collection customers get five free special collections per fiscal year, July 1 to June 30, and a mattress and box spring is on the accepted bulk list.[1] A pile is limited to 2 cubic yards, about 6 feet long by 3 feet wide by 3 feet high, and the county charges to remove a larger one.[1] About 90 percent of Fairfax County residents and businesses get trash service from a private company, so most people there ask their own hauler.[1]
  • Chesapeake. Chesapeake lists a mattress or box spring as a bulk household item and allows up to 12 household bulk collections per calendar year.[6]
  • Richmond. Richmond collects bulk items every other week on your trash day during your recycling week.[5] When we checked on October 27, 2026, Richmond offered a 24-hour bulk collection for $100 per request, paid by check or money order only.[5]

If you pay a private company or an HOA contract covers your trash, ask whether bulk items are included, how many a year, and what an extra one costs.

Drop-off fees: a few dollars

If you can borrow a truck, a county or regional drop-off site is usually the cheapest paid route. Fees we found when we checked on October 27, 2026:

  • Chesterfield County: with fees that took effect July 1, 2026, the disposal fee for a mattress at its convenience centers is $9, with identification required and an annual limit of three mattress sets per household.[3] There is no extra fee if the mattress comes in with residential household waste.[3]
  • Fairfax County: its residential disposal fees for July 2026 to June 2027 list $17 for a mattress and box spring.[2]
  • Montgomery County: the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority listed mattresses and other bulky waste at $76 per ton when we checked on October 27, 2026.[4] One mattress weighs a small fraction of a ton, so ask at the scale house what a single piece comes to.

Add the cost of the truck, fuel and an hour or two of your time, and bring proof that you live in the locality. The step-by-step version is in how to dispose of a mattress in Virginia.

Store haul-away: about $30 a piece

If a new mattress is being delivered, haul-away is often the simplest paid option. Prices we found when we checked on October 27, 2026:

  • Mattress Warehouse: $29.99 per piece to remove and recycle an old mattress or box spring during delivery, added before the delivery date, for mattresses and box springs only.[7]
  • IKEA: mattress removal starting at $30 when you buy a mattress or box spring in a store with in-home delivery, in select markets, and not for online orders.[8]
  • Casper: in-home delivery and setup for $249 with optional mattress removal, one used mattress for each new one bought, or a separate removal service through a partner for $150 in eligible areas.[9]

Condition matters. Mattress Warehouse will not take a stained mattress because of the biohazard risk to its crew, and Casper's removal requires a mattress in sanitary condition.[7][9] More on store policies is in will a mattress store take away my old mattress.

Hiring a hauler: what drives the price

A junk removal company is the most convenient route and usually the most expensive for a single mattress. There is no published price that holds across Virginia, so judge quotes by what goes into them:

  • Pieces. A mattress, box spring, frame and headboard are four items. One visit for all of them costs less than several.
  • Access. Stairs, a long carry from the bedroom to the truck, tight turns and no elevator take more time and crew.
  • Disposal fees. The hauler pays to dump the load too. Fairfax County's residential fees are for residents only, and commercial haulers pay from a separate commercial rate schedule.[2]
  • Condition. A stained, wet or bed-bug mattress may cost more to handle, or be refused. Say so when you ask for the quote.
  • Timing. Same-day or weekend service usually costs more than a scheduled slot.
  • Minimums. Many haulers have a minimum charge for any visit, which is why one mattress can cost nearly as much as several items.

What to ask for in a written quote

Ask for one all-in price in writing that names the items, includes labour, stairs and disposal, and states any minimum charge. Ask where the mattress is going and whether it will be recycled. In Fairfax County, check the company against the county's list: Fairfax County requires refuse collectors to hold a county permit called a Certificate to Operate, and contracting with a company that does not have one violates county code and can bring civil penalties.[10] What to ask a junk removal company before booking has a fuller list, and how much junk removal costs in Virginia covers larger loads.

A very low price with no address and no questions is a warning sign. Dumping trash on public property or on private property without the owner's written consent is a misdemeanor in Virginia, punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a fine of $500 to $2,500.[11]

Stop and call a pro if

  • The mattress or box spring will not fit down the stairs or through a door without removing a railing, door or window.
  • It is a heavy king or sits on an adjustable base that two people cannot carry safely.
  • It has bed bugs and you would have to carry it through shared halls or stairwells.
  • You have several bulky items or a deadline such as a move-out inspection.

Common questions

What is the cheapest way to get rid of a mattress in Virginia?
Often a bulk pickup that is already part of your trash service, such as Fairfax County's five free special collections a year for county customers. The next cheapest is driving it to a drop-off site yourself; when we checked on October 27, 2026, Chesterfield County charged $9 per mattress.
Is it cheaper to have the store take my old mattress?
Often, if you are buying a new one anyway. When we checked on October 27, 2026, Mattress Warehouse charged $29.99 per piece and IKEA started at $30 for in-store purchases with delivery. A store usually takes only as many old pieces as you buy and may refuse a stained mattress.
Does a box spring cost extra?
Often, yes. Store haul-away is usually priced per piece, so a mattress and box spring are two pieces at Mattress Warehouse. Fairfax County's drop-off fee lists a mattress and box spring together at $17. Ask a hauler to price each piece in writing.
Why do junk haulers charge more than the dump?
A hauler is paying for a truck, a crew, the drive and the disposal fee, and often a minimum charge for any visit. Stairs, a long carry, a same-day request or a stained or bed-bug mattress can add to the price, so ask for an all-in written quote.
Can I leave a mattress by the road to save money?
No. Dumping trash on public property, including a highway right-of-way, or on private property without the owner's written consent is a misdemeanor in Virginia, with a fine of $500 to $2,500 and up to 12 months in jail.
