How much does carpet installation cost in Virginia?

There is no single Virginia price. Installed cost depends on how much carpet the room needs after seams and pattern matching, the cushion, stairs, removing the old floor, moving furniture, subfloor repairs and door transitions. Get at least three written quotes on identical specifications and compare line by line.

Step by step

Read when to stop and call a pro, further down this page, before you start.

  1. Step 1: List the rooms and stairs

Write down each room, its size and whether stairs are included, so every installer prices the same job.

  2. Step 2: Choose the carpet and cushion

Pick the carpet and a cushion that meets the manufacturer's pad standard so warranty coverage is not lost.[2]

  3. Step 3: Decide who removes the old floor

Ask whether removal and haul-away of the old flooring and moving furniture are included, since they are often extra.[1]

  4. Step 4: Get at least three written quotes

Ask each contractor to bid the same specifications.[3]

  5. Step 5: Check the licence

Look up each contractor's licence with DPOR before you sign.[4]

  6. Step 6: Compare line by line

Compare carpet, cushion, labor, removal, transitions and the deposit, not just the total.[3]

Carpet installation in Virginia has no single price, because the bill is set by the room, the carpet, the cushion and what has to happen before and after the crew arrives. The reliable way to find your number is to get at least three written quotes on identical specifications and compare line by line. DPOR advises soliciting at least three bids and basing all of them on the same set of specifications, and warns against automatically accepting the lowest.[3]

What moves the price

The amount of carpet. Most carpet is manufactured in 12-foot rolls, with 15-foot rolls available as well, and a larger room may need additional material for seaming.[1] A room just over the roll width costs more per square foot than one that fits. A patterned carpet with a large pattern repeat needs more material to account for matching the pattern.[1] If you want to estimate your own yardage first, see how to measure a room for carpet.

The cushion. Pad is easy to treat as an afterthought and it should not be. STAINMASTER's texture retention coverage requires the carpet to be installed over pad that meets the HUD UM 72a, Class 1 standard in the US.[2] A cheaper pad that does not meet it can cost you the manufacturer's coverage. Also note that if a claim means replacement, the cost of any new carpet pad is not covered.[2]

Stairs. Ask for them to be priced as their own line. For STAINMASTER, its warranty excludes carpet installed on stairways.[2]

Removing the old floor and moving furniture. Shaw Floors says to expect an additional cost if your retailer or installer arranges for someone to remove your furniture or your old flooring.[1] Ask whether removal and haul-away of the old flooring is included.[1]

Subfloor and finishing. The installer inspects the subfloor for imperfections and makes necessary repairs.[1] A flat, clean floor costs less than one that needs patching or leveling. Door transitions count too: accessories such as t-moldings or reducers for transitioning to other flooring surfaces are installed at the end of the job.[1]

Time. Installation can take several hours or even a couple of days, depending on the size and complexity of the job.[1] Ask whether the labor is priced by the room, by the square yard or as a lump sum.

Carpet, cushion and labor can be priced three ways

Some retailers quote one all-in price per square yard. Others itemize carpet, cushion and labor. A third group sells carpet and lets a separate installer quote the labor. All three are fine if you ask each source to price the same carpet, the same cushion, the same rooms and the same extras. Otherwise the lowest number is simply the one that leaves things out.

The hiring side of the price

A Class C licence covers a single contract of over $1,000 but less than $30,000.[4] Virginia's contractor regulations include tack strips and other products used to secure carpet in flooring and floor covering contracting.[5] DPOR says that if the work is valued at $1,000 or more, a valid Virginia contractor's licence is required for the licence category in which the contractor is to work.[3] Ask for the licence number and look it up on DPOR's licence lookup before you sign. How to choose a flooring installer walks through that.

DPOR's rule of thumb is an initial deposit of no more than 10% of the total price or $1,000, whichever is less.[3] If the contractor asks for much more on a standard carpet order, ask why in writing.

Get quotes you can compare

Use the same room list, the same carpet and cushion, and the same answers about old flooring, furniture and stairs. What a carpet installation quote should include lists what to look for line by line. For a broader look at flooring prices, see how much new flooring costs in Virginia.

Stop and call a pro if

  • The quote is far below the others and leaves out cushion, removal or transitions. Ask for each item to be listed.
  • The crew wants a large deposit or cash before any material is ordered. Ask for the contract and payment schedule first.
  • The installer cannot give a licence number. Do not sign until you have checked it with DPOR.
  • The floor under the old carpet is damaged, wet or soft. That needs a flooring or building contractor before any carpet goes down.

Common questions

Is carpet installation priced by the square foot or square yard?
Units vary between sellers. Ask each source which unit it uses, and compare totals for the same rooms.
Does the quote include the cushion?
Not always. Ask for the cushion to be named and priced. STAINMASTER's texture retention coverage requires pad that meets the HUD UM 72a, Class 1 standard, so the cushion affects coverage.
Is moving furniture and removing old carpet extra?
Often. Shaw Floors says to expect an additional cost if the retailer or installer arranges it, so ask whether it is included.
Do I need a licensed contractor in Virginia for carpet?
DPOR says a licence is required when the work is valued at $1,000 or more. Look up the contractor's licence with DPOR.
How much deposit is reasonable?
DPOR's rule of thumb is no more than 10% of the total price or $1,000, whichever is less, unless the job needs custom or special-order items.
Why is stair carpet priced differently?
Ask for stairs as a separate line, because some warranties, such as STAINMASTER's, exclude carpet installed on stairways.
