How much does ceiling fan repair cost in Virginia?

We found no dated Virginia price for ceiling fan repair from a primary source, so we give no figure. The bill depends on what has failed: a control, switch or loose connection is a short visit, while a bad box, a failed motor or a hard-to-reach ceiling costs more or ends in a new fan. This is a job for a licensed pro in Virginia

This page explains what the work involves, the permits, what a licensed pro does and what drives the cost. It does not give step-by-step instructions, because this work needs a licence, a permit or both, and doing it wrong can injure someone. Before you hire, check the licence on Virginia's DPOR record.

What drives the cost

What is actually wrong. A fan that will not start can be a tripped breaker, a loose connection, a reversing switch or pull chain that is not engaged, or something larger. Hunter's troubleshooting table lists those first, along with a non-approved speed control as a cause of noise.[1] The cheapest repairs are the ones where the fan itself is fine and a control or connection is at fault. The most expensive are a failed motor or a hanging problem that has to be solved before the fan can safely run.

The controls. A replacement wall control or remote has to suit the fan. ENERGY STAR says to look for controls that match your fan on maximum amps, number of speeds, total lamp wattage and brand.[3] A mismatched control can create the problem you are paying to fix, so the electrician may have to source a particular part.

The box and the support. If the box is not rated for a fan, the job grows. ENERGY STAR advises a UL-listed metal box marked "For Use With Ceiling Fans" and says that if you are replacing a ceiling fixture you will most likely need to replace the box.[2] It also notes that ceiling fans can weigh as much as 50 pounds.[2] Where the box has to be replaced or braced, expect more time and possibly work in the attic or ceiling.

Access and height. A fan over a stairwell, a vaulted ceiling or a ceiling with no attic access takes more time and more equipment than a fan in a bedroom with a standard ceiling. Hunter notes that angle mounting is made for a vaulted or angled ceiling and extension rods are sold for ceilings higher than eight feet,[1] which gives you an idea of the range of fans an electrician meets.

Parts. A blade set, a switch housing or a light kit may be a simple order for a current model and hard to find for an old one. If parts are unavailable, a repair can turn into a replacement; see repair or replace a ceiling fan.

Time and travel. Electricians quote differently: a flat diagnostic or trip charge plus an hourly rate, a flat price per task, or a price after they have seen the fan. None of these is better in itself. What matters is that the quote says which one you are getting.

Do I need a permit

Usually not for a straight repair. Virginia's building code lists replacement of luminaires and ceiling (paddle) fans among ordinary repairs that need no permit application in Group R-2 where serving a single dwelling unit and in Groups R-3, R-4, and R-5.[4] Adding a fan where there was none, a new circuit or a new switch run is a different job, and the electrician should tell you whether a permit applies and who pulls it. Any permit fee would be added to the quote.

Getting a quote you can compare

The Board for Contractors advises getting at least three written bids or estimates using identical plans and specifications so you can compare prices and contractors, and not automatically accepting the lowest.[5] For a fan, ask each electrician to state:

  • what they think is wrong, and what they will do if it turns out to be something else
  • whether the price includes diagnosis, parts, the box or support, and disposal of the old fan
  • the brand and model of any replacement control or fan
  • the warranty on parts and labour
  • who pulls a permit, if one applies

On payment, the Board for Contractors gives a rule of thumb of an initial deposit of no more than 10% of the total price or $1,000, whichever is less.[5] For a small repair many electricians ask for nothing up front.

When to call a licensed pro

If you are paying for the work, it needs a licensed electrician. Virginia's Code says no individual may engage in, or offer to engage in, work as a tradesman unless licensed,[6] and DPOR says that if the work is valued at $1,000 or more, a valid Virginia Contractor's License is required for the license category in which the contractor is to work.[5] The Board for Contractors also warns that if you contract with someone who does not hold a license, it may not be able to help you resolve a complaint.[5] Check the licence before you agree to anything.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a ceiling fan?
It depends on what has failed and the fan's age. A control, switch or connection is usually worth repairing. A failed motor, missing parts or an inadequate box can tip the balance toward a new fan, so ask for the repair price and the replacement price side by side.
Do electricians charge a trip or diagnostic fee?
Many quote one, but practices differ. Ask whether a diagnostic charge is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
Does a ceiling fan repair need a permit in Virginia?
Replacement of ceiling (paddle) fans and luminaires is listed among the ordinary repairs that need no permit application in the residential groups the code names. A new circuit, new switch run or a fan where none existed is different.
How much deposit should I pay?
The Board for Contractors suggests an initial deposit of no more than 10% of the total price or $1,000, whichever is less. For a small repair, many electricians ask for payment on completion.
Can a handyman repair my ceiling fan?
Only if the person doing the electrical work holds an electrical tradesman licence or works under a licensed tradesman. Virginia's Code says no individual may work as a tradesman unless licensed.
