How much does junk removal cost in Virginia?

There is no statewide price: haulers quote by how much of the truck your load fills, how heavy it is, how hard it is to carry out, and what the local landfill charges them. Public fees set a floor. In Fairfax County, for July 2026 to June 2027, trash costs $98 a ton to dump and a sofa or mattress set $17 at the county's drop-off sites.

Step by step

Read when to stop and call a pro, further down this page, before you start.

  1. Step 1: Pull out what you can give away

Set aside working furniture, appliances and tools to sell or donate, so you are not paying to haul them.

  2. Step 2: Separate items haulers refuse

Keep paint, chemicals, fuel, propane tanks and batteries out of the pile; they go to a household hazardous waste program instead.[7]

  3. Step 3: Flag the surcharge items

List refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, AC units, mattresses and tires separately, since disposal sites often charge for them by the item.[1]

  4. Step 4: Estimate the size of the pile

Gather everything in one place and measure it roughly, or count the large pieces, so quotes are based on the same load.

  5. Step 5: Take photos

Photograph the pile and the route out of the house, including stairs and narrow doors, and send the photos with your request.

  6. Step 6: Get written, all-in quotes

Ask each company for a written price that includes labor, disposal fees and every item surcharge, plus the minimum charge.

  7. Step 7: Compare with doing part yourself

Check your locality's bulk pickup and drop-off fees; a few large items may be cheaper to haul or schedule yourself.

There is no single price for junk removal in Virginia. Haulers quote by how much of the truck your load fills, how heavy it is, how hard it is to get out of the house, and which items carry extra disposal charges. What the local landfill or transfer station charges them sits underneath every quote, and those public fees are the one cost that is published and dated. Here is what drives the price, what the public facilities charge, and how to get a quote you can compare.

What a junk removal quote is made of

Volume. Most companies price by the share of the truck the load takes up, from a single item up to a full truck, with a minimum charge for small jobs. A pile you have gathered in one place is easier to price, and cheaper to remove, than items spread across an attic, basement and shed.

Weight. Landfills charge haulers by the ton, so dense loads cost more than bulky ones. Fairfax County's tipping fee for trash at its I-95 and I-66 facilities is $98 per ton for Fiscal Year 2027, which runs July 2026 to June 2027,[2] with a $39 minimum for a small load and $98 for a large one.[2] EPA's volume-to-weight table puts uncompacted mixed household and commercial trash at 250 to 300 pounds per cubic yard and concrete at 860 pounds per cubic yard.[6] A truck of old furniture and a truck of broken concrete can be the same size and very different bills.

Labor and access. Two people carrying a sofa from a driveway is a different job from carrying a piano down a flight of stairs. Narrow halls, long carries, upper floors, items that must be taken apart and tight parking all add time.

Surcharge items. Appliances that hold refrigerant, mattresses, tires and electronics cost the landfill more to handle, and haulers usually pass that on per item.

What they will not take. Paint, fuel, chemicals, propane tanks and batteries are usually excluded. Fairfax County's household hazardous waste program takes paint, fuel, batteries and pesticides free from county residents,[7] and most localities have something similar.

Public disposal fees in Virginia, as published

These are what the public pays at county and regional facilities. They are not junk removal prices, but they show the disposal part of any quote and what doing some of it yourself would cost.

Fairfax County. Fairfax County's residential drop-off fees for July 2026 to June 2027 charge $17 each for a sofa, recliner, dresser or desk, dining table, carpet or pad, or mattress and box spring,[1] $15 for each appliance that needs its refrigerant or a capacitor removed, such as a refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier or air conditioner,[1] and $14 each for one to ten passenger tires.[1] Unbagged bulk trash is $98 a ton with a $39 minimum,[1] and brick, concrete, dirt and rock are $109 a ton with a $49 minimum, limited to about 2 cubic yards a day per household.[1]

Montgomery County and the New River Valley. When we checked on October 26, 2026, the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority listed bulky waste such as mattresses and furniture at $76 per ton,[5] construction material at $53 per ton,[5] a $19 Freon removal fee for each appliance not certified as Freon-free,[5] and tires at $0.20 a pound with a $4.00 minimum for up to 20 pounds.[5]

Check what your trash service already includes

Before paying a hauler for a few large items, find out what your regular collection covers.

Fairfax County residents whose trash the county collects get five free special pickups per fiscal year, scheduled in advance, for bulk items, appliances with refrigerant, brush, metal and electronics.[3] Each pile is limited to 2 cubic yards, about 6 feet long, 3 feet wide and 3 feet high, with a charge for anything larger.[3] About 90 percent of Fairfax residents and businesses use a private collector instead,[3] so ask yours what it offers.

Richmond collects bulk items every other week on your trash day during your recycling week.[4] When we checked on October 26, 2026, the city also offered a 24-hour bulk collection for $100 per request and appliance collection for $50 per appliance.[4] City residents can also take bulk items to the East Richmond Road Convenience Center or the Hopkins Road transfer station.[4]

When the job is a whole basement, a garage or an estate, or the items are too heavy to move yourself, a hauler is usually worth it. When it is one sofa and your locality picks up bulk items, it may not be.

What to ask for in a written quote

  • One all-in price, or a clear per-volume rate, that includes labor, travel and disposal.
  • The minimum charge, and how the crew will measure the load on the day.
  • Every per-item surcharge: refrigerators and freezers, AC units, mattresses, tires, TVs and electronics.
  • What they will not take, so you can plan for those items separately.
  • Whether the price changes if the pile is bigger or heavier than described, and by how much.
  • Whether they donate or recycle what they can.

Stop and call a pro if

  • The load includes heavy items you cannot move safely, such as a piano, a hot tub, a safe or a chest freezer.
  • The cleanout turns up chemicals, unlabelled containers, fuel or anything you cannot identify.
  • The job means taking down a shed, deck, fence or other structure first. That is demolition, which is a different job from hauling.

Common questions

Do junk removal companies charge by the truckload or by the item?
Both are common. Many quote by the share of the truck the load fills, with a minimum charge for a single item, and add surcharges for items the landfill charges extra for, such as appliances with refrigerant, mattresses and tires. Ask how yours prices before booking.
Why is a small load of concrete or dirt so expensive?
Weight. EPA's conversion table puts concrete at 860 pounds per cubic yard, against 250 to 300 pounds for loose household trash, and landfills charge by the ton. Heavy debris also fills a truck's weight limit long before it fills the space.
Is it cheaper to take junk to the dump myself?
For a few items, often yes, if you have a truck. In Fairfax County a sofa or mattress set cost $17 at the county's drop-off sites for July 2026 to June 2027, and Richmond lets city residents drop off bulk items at its convenience center and transfer station. You trade the hauler's fee for your time and the loading.
Does my trash service pick up furniture for free?
Some do. Fairfax County collection customers get five free special pickups a year, and Richmond collects bulk items every other week. Private haulers and other localities set their own rules, so check with whoever collects your trash.
What makes a junk removal quote go up on the day?
Usually a bigger or heavier pile than described, items added at the last minute, stairs or long carries nobody mentioned, and surcharge items that were not on the list. Photos and an all-in written quote prevent most of it.
