Security & Smart Home: questions, answered with sources
Each answer cites the public sources it was checked against, with the date it checked them. Jobs that need a licensed pro in Virginia say so, and explain the job instead of teaching it.

Alarm Systems
5 answers
How do I choose a home alarm system?
Decide first whether you want professional monitoring or only phone alerts, because that sets the price and the features. Then compare how the system stays online in an outage, who installs it, and the contract terms. If a company installs or monitors it, confirm it holds a Virginia private security services business license.
How much does a monitored home alarm system cost in Virginia?
There is no single Virginia price. When we checked Ring's own site on October 27, 2026, an 8-piece alarm kit was $249.99 and the plan that includes 24/7 professional monitoring was $19.99 a month, about $970 over three years. Companies that install and monitor set their own equipment, installation and contract terms, so get written quotes.
Do alarm companies need a license in Virginia?
Yes. A business that installs, services, monitors or responds to burglar alarms or security cameras for a homeowner needs a private security services business license from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, and its technicians, salespeople and monitoring staff must be registered. The license number must appear on the company's advertising.
Why does my home alarm keep going off for no reason?
Most false alarms come from a loose door or window contact, a motion detector tripped by a pet, vent or decoration, a low battery, or someone who does not know how to cancel. Check the panel history for which zone tripped, fix that cause, replace weak batteries, and retrain everyone with a code before a repeat brings fees.
How often should I test my home alarm system?
Test smoke alarms every month, as the U.S. Fire Administration advises, and walk-test your sensors on the same day. Once a year check batteries and clean motion detector lenses. Tell your monitoring company or use test mode first so a test is not dispatched, and fix any sensor that fails to report.
Home Theater & Audio

How do I set up surround sound in a living room?
Start with a receiver or soundbar that has enough HDMI inputs, plug it into the TV's HDMI ARC port, place the front speakers either side of the TV and the rear speakers beside or behind the seats, run the auto-calibration, then set the volume where you can talk over it. Keep cables on the floor or wireless, anchor the TV, and leave in-wall wiring to a pro.
How much does home theater installation cost in Virginia?
There is no reliable single Virginia price, because the cost depends on the job: a plug-in soundbar, a surround system with a receiver, in-wall wiring, or a built-out room. Get at least three written bids that cover the same work, check each contractor's licence, and keep the first deposit to no more than 10 percent of the price or $1,000, whichever is less.
Should I hire a pro to install a home theater?
Do it yourself if everything plugs in: a soundbar or receiver with speakers on stands, cables along the baseboard. Hire a pro for in-wall or ceiling wiring, a new outlet, a projector or a wall-mounted heavy TV. In Virginia, work valued at $1,000 or more needs a licensed contractor, and sound-system installation is a licensed specialty.
Security Cameras
5 answers
Where should I put security cameras on my house?
Cover the ways people reach your door: the front entry, the back or side door and the driveway. Mount outdoor cameras about 8 to 10 feet up with a slight downward tilt, in a shaded spot such as under an eave, and aim them at the approach rather than at the street or a neighbor's windows.
How much does a home security camera system cost in Virginia?
There is no single Virginia price. When we checked Ring's own site on October 27, 2026, one outdoor camera was listed at $79.99, a one-device cloud plan was $4.99 a month and professional installation started at $129.99 per device. Your total depends on how many cameras, wired or battery, storage and who installs.
Is it legal to record audio on home security cameras in Virginia?
Often yes, but not always. Virginia allows recording a conversation if you are a party to it or one party has consented. It makes intentionally intercepting an oral communication you are not part of a Class 6 felony when the speakers reasonably expect privacy. So audio at your own door is usually fine, while a mic that listens in on others is the risk.
Why do my security cameras keep going offline?
Most cameras drop offline because of Wi-Fi: the camera is too far from the router, something blocks the signal, an extender or second router interferes, or other devices use up the bandwidth. Power and temperature are the other usual causes. Check power, restart the camera, then the router, and move the camera closer.
How do I keep outdoor security cameras clean and working?
Every few months, wipe the lens gently with a dry cloth, clear spider webs and dirt, and check the live view for blocked or glaring spots. Keep cameras out of a hose or pressure washer, recharge battery cameras, keep solar panels in sun, and turn on automatic updates. Check again after storms and in winter.
Smart Home Installation

How do I set up smart plugs and smart bulbs?
Put the plug into an outlet, or screw the bulb into a lamp, then use the maker's app on your phone to add it to your home Wi-Fi, name it by room and set a schedule. Check the load rating on the label first, use the right bulb wattage for the lamp, and turn on automatic updates.
How much does smart home installation cost in Virginia?
There is no single Virginia price. It depends on how many devices you want and whether anyone has to run wire. When we checked on October 27, 2026, Ring listed professional installation from $129.99 per device, and Dominion Energy offered up to a $50 rebate on a smart thermostat. Get written quotes for the same list.
Is it worth paying someone to set up a smart home?
Pay for a pro when the job involves wiring, a ladder, many devices that must work together, or an alarm. Do the plug-in and screw-in devices yourself. Virginia's Board for Contractors says a contractor licence is required for work valued at $1,000 or more, so check the licence in DPOR's lookup and get three written quotes for the same list.
Why do my smart home devices keep disconnecting?
Usually a weak or crowded Wi-Fi signal where the device sits, a router that needs a restart or an update, or a device that can only use the 2.4 GHz band. Check the signal at the device, restart the router, update its firmware, and move the device or add a mesh node if it is far from the router.
How do I keep smart home devices secure and updated?
Turn on automatic updates in every device's app and on your router, give each account its own password of at least 16 characters, switch on multifactor sign-in, and change the router's default administrator password. Then review the list of devices every few months and remove the ones you no longer use.
Smart Locks
5 answers
How do I install a smart lock?
Most battery-powered smart deadbolts replace your existing deadbolt with a screwdriver and no wiring. Check that your door and frame line up, confirm the door's dimensions match the lock, swap the bolt and the two lock halves, and add the batteries last. Then pair the lock in its app, accept firmware updates and test it with the door open before you shut yourself out.
How much does a smart lock cost installed in Virginia?
There is no single Virginia installed price. When we checked on October 27, 2026, Schlage listed its smart deadbolts from $199 to $399 before installation. Labor depends on whether the door already has standard deadbolt holes, how many locks you want and who does the work, so get written quotes that name the lock model, the labor and any trip charge.
Are smart locks safe?
A well-chosen smart lock can be as safe as the deadbolt it replaces, but it adds risks a key lock does not have: a weak account password, an unpatched lock, forgotten guest codes and dead batteries. Pick a lock with a physical key backup, use a long unique password with two-step sign-in, keep the firmware updated and prune access codes.
Why does my smart lock battery die so fast?
Smart lock batteries usually drain fast because the motor is fighting a door that no longer lines up with its frame, the cells are the wrong type or a mismatched set, or a connection is poor. Check alignment first, then fit a fresh matched set of the exact type the manual names and note the date to measure real life.
How often should I change the batteries in a smart lock?
Change smart lock batteries when the lock warns you, not on a fixed calendar, because life varies with the model, the cells and how well the door lines up. Use the battery type in your manual, replace the whole set at once, keep a key or jumpstart option handy and log the date of each change.
Smart Thermostats
2 answers
How do I set a smart thermostat schedule to save energy?
Build the schedule around when the house is empty or asleep: set around 68°F to 70°F in winter while you are home and awake, and turn the temperature back 7°F to 10°F for eight hours a day. The Department of Energy put the savings at up to 10% a year. In summer, run warmer while you are out. Heat pumps are the exception.
Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?
Often not, but it depends on the thermostat and your system. Google says many Nest models can run without one, and ecobee says its power extender kit was used in under 15% of installs. Honeywell's T5 requires one. Check the maker's compatibility checker, then look behind your old thermostat for a C terminal or an unused wire.
Structured Wiring

How do I run Ethernet cable through the walls?
Use paths that already exist: a basement, crawlspace or attic into the wall, then a small drywall opening for the jack. Fish the cable with a fish tape, keep it away from household power wiring, and never share a box with it. Anything needing new holes in framing, fire-rated walls or runs beside line-voltage wiring is a job for a licensed pro.
How much does it cost to wire a house for Ethernet in Virginia?
There is no standard Virginia price, and no primary source dates one. The cost follows the number of cable runs, how hard each is to reach, whether equipment and testing are included, and the contractor's licence class. Get at least three written bids on the same room list, check each licence with DPOR, and keep the deposit to 10% or $1,000, whichever is less.
Should I hire a low-voltage contractor to wire my house for Ethernet?
Hire one if the walls are finished, the route crosses a fire-rated wall or you want many jacks and a central rack. Do it yourself for one or two cables along an easy path. In Virginia cabling is a licensed specialty, and for work valued at $1,000 or more the contractor must hold a valid licence in the right category.
Why is my Ethernet connection slower than my internet plan?
Usually the cable is not the limit. Test one computer plugged straight into the modem, with everything else idle. If that is fast, the router, a switch, an old port or a bad cable run is holding it back. If it is slow too, the problem is the plan, the provider's network or the modem, and the provider has to fix it.
Video Doorbells
4 answers
How do I install a battery-powered video doorbell?
Charge the battery first, then add the doorbell in its app while it is still in your hand and check the picture. Pick a spot about 4 feet off the ground, fix the bracket with screws (anchors in masonry), hook the doorbell on, lock it with the security screw and test it. Leave any hookup to existing doorbell wiring to a licensed electrician.
How much does it cost to install a video doorbell in Virginia?
There is no single Virginia price. When we checked on October 27, 2026, Google listed its Nest Doorbell (Battery) at $199.99, and Ring said professional installation starts at $129.99 per device, billed separately. Labor depends on the model, the wall and whether existing doorbell wiring is involved, so get written quotes that name the device and everything you pay for.
Why does my video doorbell keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi?
Most dropouts come from a weak signal at the front door, interference, a router that needs a restart, or a low battery that cuts the doorbell's Wi-Fi performance. Check the signal first, restart the router, then charge the doorbell. If it still drops, move a mesh node or extender closer to the door.
How often should I charge a battery video doorbell?
There is no fixed schedule. Recharge when the app reports a low battery, which can come after weeks or months depending on how busy your door is, the weather and your camera settings. Check the level in the app every few weeks, charge before it runs out, and use a solar charger if the doorbell drains quickly.
Whole-Home Audio
4 answers
How does whole-home audio work?
Whole-home audio sends music to several rooms at once. Wireless speakers join your Wi-Fi and take orders from a phone app, while a wired system uses a central amplifier and speaker wire to in-wall or in-ceiling speakers. Plug-in wireless is a safe DIY job; cable inside walls is not.
How much does whole-home audio cost in Virginia?
There is no reliable single Virginia price, because the cost depends on the design: plug-in wireless speakers cost only the speakers, while a wired system adds an amplifier, cable and labor. Get at least three itemized written bids, check each licence, and keep the first deposit to 10 percent or $1,000, whichever is less.
Should I hire an audio installer for in-ceiling speakers?
Yes, for most homes. In-ceiling speakers mean cutting drywall and running cable past joists and house wiring, and in Virginia work valued at $1,000 or more needs a licensed contractor, with sound systems a licensed specialty. Keep app setup and plug-in speakers for yourself.
Why is one of my in-ceiling speakers not working?
Often the fault is in the source, the amplifier, a volume control or the wire connections, not the speaker. Confirm the source is playing and the amplifier is on, bypass any volume control, then check the connections at the amplifier, where you can reach them. If a Sonos Amp is flashing orange and white, test one speaker at a time. Anything above the ceiling is a pro's job.
Wifi & Networking

How do I get good Wi-Fi in every room of my house?
Start by moving the router to a central, open spot, away from the floor and from other electronics, then update its firmware. If some rooms are still weak, add a mesh system: the router connects to your modem, and each satellite goes within 25 to 50 feet of the router or another satellite. Cabling through walls is work to hand to a licensed pro.
How much does it cost to have whole-house Wi-Fi installed in Virginia?
It depends on whether you need only a mesh kit or also cabling. When we checked on October 27, 2026, NETGEAR listed a two-satellite Orbi mesh kit at $299.99, $599.99 or $1,799.99, depending on the model. Labor for cabling varies with the number of runs and how hard they are to reach, so get at least three written bids.
Should I hire someone to set up a mesh Wi-Fi system?
Usually not. Mesh kits are built for self-setup: the router connects to your modem, each satellite plugs in within 25 to 50 feet of the router or another satellite, and the maker's phone app walks you through it. Hire a licensed pro when you want Ethernet cable run through walls or ceilings, or when a contract reaches $1,000.
Why is my Wi-Fi slow upstairs?
Usually because the router sits on another floor, and the signal has to pass through ceilings, walls and appliances to reach you. The 5 GHz band is faster but more sensitive to obstacles. Move the router to a central, open spot, angle its antennas about 30 degrees, then add a mesh unit or extender about halfway if the upstairs is still weak.
How often should I replace my Wi-Fi router?
There is no fixed number of years. Replace a router when the manufacturer stops releasing firmware and security updates for it, which the FBI calls end of life, or when it cannot use the strongest security setting, WPA3. Until then, keep its firmware current and its settings tight, and fix placement before blaming the hardware.
