Handyman: questions, answered with sources

Each answer cites the public sources it was checked against, with the date it checked them. Jobs that need a licensed pro in Virginia say so, and explain the job instead of teaching it.

Appliance Installation

5 answers

How toLicensed pro

What does installing a gas range involve?

A finished gas range install should leave you with a new flexible connector, the range's own pressure regulator in the line, every gas joint leak-tested, a grounded outlet, and the range engaged in its anti-tip bracket. In Virginia the gas hookup is licensed trade work, and the building code's appliance exemption excludes gas appliances, so a permit is usually part of the job.

CostLicensed pro

How much does appliance installation cost in Virginia?

There is no official or standard price for appliance installation in Virginia, so the real number is a written quote. What moves it: whether the hookups already match the new appliance, whether gas, a new circuit or new plumbing is involved (licensed work that may need a permit), haul-away of the old unit, new connectors and hoses, and any cabinet or opening changes.

HiringLicensed pro

Who can hook up a gas dryer or range in Virginia?

In Virginia, connecting a gas dryer or range is gas fitting, so the person making the connection should be licensed for gas work, such as a DPOR-licensed gas fitter. On a job over $1,000 the business also needs a contractor licence, and a home improvement (HIC) specialty does not cover gas fitting. Columbia Gas of Virginia, for one, handles only the line up to and including its meter.

TroubleshootingLicensed pro

Why is my new dishwasher leaking after installation?

A new dishwasher that leaks usually has an installation problem: a supply or drain connection that is loose or missing its rubber washer, a drain hose that is kinked or not fully seated, a unit that is not level so the door does not seal, or a door rubbing the cabinets. Suds from hand dish soap are the other common cause. Call the installer back first.

UpkeepLicensed pro

How do I check appliance hookups for leaks?

Look, do not pull. A few times a year, check under the sink while the dishwasher runs, behind the washer for bulging or cracked hoses, and around the refrigerator for damp floor. Whirlpool recommends replacing washer inlet hoses after five years. Gas hookups are different: never move a gas range or dryer to inspect its connector, and have a licensed pro check and leak-test gas connections.

Assembly & Mounting

5 answers

How to

How do I anchor furniture to the wall so it can't tip over?

Fasten a tip restraint, a strap or bracket, from the top back of the piece to a wall stud, using a wood screw driven into the stud rather than an anchor in bare drywall. Keep the strap short and snug, put the heaviest things in the bottom drawers, and set TVs on low, sturdy furniture or anchor them too.

Cost

How much does furniture assembly cost in Virginia?

There is no official or standard furniture assembly rate in Virginia, so the real number is a written quote. What moves it: how many pieces and how complex they are, whether the business charges per item or by the hour with a minimum, wall anchoring, stairs and access, travel distance and box removal. Send every business the same list with model numbers.

Hiring

Is it worth paying someone to assemble furniture?

Often, for big or heavy pieces such as wardrobes, beds and dressers, for a whole room at once, and for anchoring tall furniture to wall studs. Small, simple pieces like nightstands, chairs and basic shelves are usually worth doing yourself. Decide piece by piece, and get written quotes for the same list from several businesses.

Troubleshooting

Why does my flat-pack furniture wobble after assembly?

Usually one of four things: the floor is uneven or carpeted, a cam lock was not turned far enough to pull its joint tight, the back panel is loose or missing so the frame racks out of square, or a screw has stripped its hole in the particleboard. Check them in that order; most wobbles are fixed without taking the piece apart.

Upkeep

How do I keep assembled furniture from loosening over time?

Build it completely, with every dowel, cam lock and back-panel nail, and tighten screws by hand without overdoing it. Then go round the hardware when the seasons change, keep indoor humidity steady, keep particleboard dry, lift pieces instead of dragging them, load heavy things low and anchor tall furniture to a wall stud.

Caulking & Sealing

5 answers

How to

How do I recaulk a bathtub?

Cut and scrape out every bit of the old caulk, clean off any mold, wipe the joint with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely. Then run one steady bead of 100% silicone kitchen and bath sealant, smooth it within a few minutes, and keep water off it for as long as the label says. Silicone cannot be painted, so choose the colour first.

Cost

How much does it cost to recaulk a tub or shower in Virginia?

We found no official published rate for recaulking in Virginia, so the real number is a written quote. Materials are a small part of it; the price is mostly labour, and it rises with how much old caulk has to be cut out, any mold to clean first, how many joints are included, and damage found behind the old bead.

Hiring

Should I hire someone to recaulk my bathroom?

If the old caulk is just stained, cracked or peeling and the wall and tile behind it are sound, recaulking is a reasonable job to do yourself. Hire someone when there are signs water has got behind the surface, when mold is widespread, when the surfaces are delicate, or when you want several joints done neatly in one visit.

Troubleshooting

Why does my caulk keep cracking?

Caulk that keeps cracking is usually the wrong product for a joint that moves, a bead laid too thin or stuck to the back of the joint, or new caulk put on a dirty or old surface it cannot grip. Acrylic caulk also shrinks as it cures. Cut it all out, clean the joint and use a flexible sealant sized to the gap.

Upkeep

How often should I recaulk my shower?

Recaulk when the caulk fails, not on a fixed date. GE says a good silicone sealant should last 3 to 5 years in a shower, depending on use, ventilation and cleaning, and to inspect it every year. Check it each spring and fall, and replace it sooner if it cracks, peels, pulls away or has mold inside it that will not clean off.

Caulking & Weatherproofing

5 answers

How to

How do I weatherstrip a drafty door?

Find where the air gets in, then seal each gap with the right product: compression or V-strip weatherstripping on the top and both sides of the door, and a door sweep or vinyl-bulb threshold across the bottom. Clean and dry the surfaces first, fit the strip so the door still closes and latches easily, and caulk any gap between the trim and the wall.

Cost

How much does weatherproofing a house cost in Virginia?

It ranges from the price of a few tubes of caulk and rolls of weatherstripping for a do-it-yourself door and window job, to a contractor's quote for whole-house air sealing that depends on attic access, the age of the house and how much leakage the audit finds. Eligible Virginia households can get it free, and Dominion offers rebates after an audit.

Hiring

Is it worth hiring someone to weatherproof my house?

Weatherstripping doors and caulking windows is easy to do yourself. Hiring pays off for whole-house air sealing: a trained auditor uses a blower door to find the hidden attic and basement leaks, tests gas appliances for safe venting before and after, and can qualify you for utility rebates. Many Virginia households can get the work free through weatherization programs.

Troubleshooting

Where are the biggest air leaks in a house?

In most homes the biggest air leaks are hidden in the attic floor and the basement or crawl space, not at the windows and doors where you feel drafts. Warm air escapes through holes for wiring, pipes, flues, recessed lights and the attic hatch, and outside air is pulled in where the house framing sits on the foundation.

Upkeep

How often should I check weatherstripping and caulk around my house?

Make it a regular walk-around rather than waiting for a draft: look over exterior caulk and door and window weatherstripping each fall before the heating season, give busy doors and thresholds a quick look in spring, and check again after any leak. Caulk does not last indefinitely, and joints can fail before they look damaged, so a routine check matters more than any label lifespan.

Deck Repair

5 answers

How to

How do I replace rotten deck boards?

Back out the fasteners, lift out the rotten board and check the joists under it before anything goes back. If the framing is firm, cut a matching board so each end lands on a joist, seal the cut ends, and fasten it at every joist with two corrosion-resistant screws or nails. Soft joists, posts or a loose ledger make it a contractor's job.

Cost

How much does deck repair cost in Virginia?

It depends far more on what is under the boards than on the boards themselves. Replacing a few deck boards or balusters is a small job, while rotted joists, posts or a ledger mean framing work that may need a permit and an inspection. Get at least three written quotes for the same list of work, and check the contractor's licence once the job is over $1,000.

Hiring

Should I repair my deck or replace it?

Repair it when the frame underneath is sound and the damage is limited to boards, balusters, a stair tread or a post or two. Replace it when rot or rust runs through the joists, beams, posts or ledger, when connections are missing, or when the railings, stairs and frame would all need rebuilding at once anyway.

Troubleshooting

How do I tell if my deck is safe?

Check it once a year from above and underneath. Look for soft or rotted wood in the joists, posts and ledger, rusted or missing connectors, a ledger pulling away from the house, and railings or stairs that move when you push on them. If anything at the connections or framing looks wrong, stay off the deck until a licensed contractor inspects it.

Upkeep

How do I protect deck boards and joists from rot?

Rot needs wood that stays wet, so the job is keeping the deck able to dry. Keep the gaps between boards clear, keep leaves, firewood and debris out from under it, steer downspouts and sprinklers away, refinish the boards with a penetrating stain or water-repellent preservative, seal cut ends, and check the framing every year so small problems are caught early.

Doors & Windows

5 answers

How to

How do I fix a door that won't latch?

Most doors that won't latch are out of line, not broken. Tighten the hinge screws first, since a sagging door drops the latch below the strike. Then mark the latch to see where it hits, and file, move or deepen the strike to match. If the door only misses in humid weather, wait for that season before adjusting, and check that thick weatherstripping is not pushing it away.

Cost

How much does a handyman charge to hang a door in Virginia?

There is no standard or official rate in Virginia, so the honest number is a written quote. What sets it: a slab in the old frame or a pre-hung unit, interior or exterior, whether the door comes bored for its hardware, how much trimming and finishing it needs, trim and haul-away, and any rot. A contract over $1,000 needs a licensed contractor.

Hiring

Should I hire a handyman or a carpenter to fix doors and windows?

Hire by the job, not the title. Virginia licenses neither "handyman" nor "carpenter"; it licenses contractors by contract size and type of work. A handyman suits small fixes like latches, hinges, sash cords and weatherstripping. Over $1,000, the business needs a contractor's licence, and anything that changes the framed opening or structure needs a permit and a contractor who does framing.

Troubleshooting

Why is there a draft around my windows?

A window draft usually comes from one of three places: between the sash and the frame, where weatherstripping is worn or the lock is not pulling the sashes tight; between the window frame and the wall, behind the trim; or through cracked glass and missing putty. Cold single-pane glass can also chill the air next to it, which feels like a draft even without a leak.

Upkeep

How do I keep wood windows from sticking?

Keep paint off the surfaces that slide, keep the channels clean, and keep water out of the wood. Paint with the sash open and let it dry fully before closing it, clean dirt from sills and tracks, tighten loose hardware, and check the exterior paint and caulk once a year so the wood does not soak up water and swell.

Drywall & Paint

5 answers

How to

How do I patch a small hole in drywall?

Clean the hole, trim loose paper, then press spackling or patching compound in with a putty knife, leaving it slightly proud. Holes deeper than about 1/8 inch go in thin layers. Once dry, sand it flush, prime the patch so it does not soak up paint, and repaint. Holes up to a few inches need a self-adhesive patch or paper tape behind the compound.

Cost

How much does drywall repair cost in Virginia?

There is no official or standard price for drywall repair in Virginia, so the real number is a written quote. What moves it: how many holes and how big, ceilings and texture, whether the wall is repainted, how many return visits drying time forces, and lead or asbestos precautions in an older home. DPOR says work valued at $1,000 or more needs a licensed contractor.

Hiring

Should I hire a handyman or a drywall contractor?

For a few holes, cracks or one patch, a handyman is usually the practical choice. Hire a drywall or painting contractor for whole rooms, ceilings, new sections of drywall, texture matching or a smooth finish under strong light. In Virginia, DPOR says work valued at $1,000 or more needs a licensed contractor, and paid work that disturbs paint in a pre-1978 home needs lead-safe certification.

Troubleshooting

Why is my drywall patch showing through the paint?

Usually because the patch was not primed: bare joint compound absorbs paint differently from the painted wall around it, so it dries duller or shinier, which painters call flashing. A smooth patch on a textured wall, a ridge or dip, scuffed paper, a glossy sheen and side lighting make it worse. Prime the patch, match the texture, then repaint the wall.

Upkeep

How do I protect walls from scuffs and dents?

Stop the hits at the source with door stops, felt pads, corner guards and furniture kept a little off the wall. In halls and stairs, use a washable eggshell, satin or scuff-resistant paint rather than flat. Let new paint cure about two weeks before scrubbing, clean marks gently with warm water and mild soap, and fix small dings early.

Fixture Replacement

4 answers

How to

How do I replace a towel bar?

Find out how the old bar is held on (a set screw or a hidden tab at the base of each post), lift it off, take out the brackets and old anchors, then mount the new brackets level, into studs with wood screws or into drywall with anchors, and hang the bar. It takes a drill, a level and an hour or so.

Cost

How much does a handyman charge to replace bathroom fixtures in Virginia?

There is no set rate in Virginia, so the price is whatever a written quote says. It depends on how the business charges, how many fixtures share one visit, the wall, who buys the parts, and which items are plumbing or electrical. Plumbing and electrical work for pay needs a licensed tradesman, which can mean a second quote.

HiringLicensed pro

Can a handyman replace light fixtures in Virginia?

Only if the person doing the wiring is a licensed electrician or works under one's supervision. Virginia treats electrical work done for pay as licensed trade work at any job size, and the home improvement licence many handymen hold does not cover it. A like-for-like fixture swap in a house needs no permit, but it still needs a licensed tradesman when you pay someone.

Troubleshooting

Why does my towel bar keep pulling out of the wall?

Usually because its brackets are held only by small anchors in drywall, and every tug on the bar works them loose until the hole is too big to grip. Wet, soft drywall, anchors that are too small, and people leaning on the bar make it worse. The fix is fresh holes with a stronger anchor or a stud, not a bigger screw in the old hole.

Grab Bars & Accessibility

5 answers

How to

How do I install a grab bar in a shower?

Screw it into wood studs, or into the anchors the grab bar's maker supplies for it, never into drywall or tile alone. Find the stud centers, mark the flange holes level, drill small pilot holes into the wood, fasten each flange with all its screws, then fit the bar and pull hard on it. Tile over unknown backing is the time to hire someone.

Cost

How much does grab bar installation cost in Virginia?

There is no official Virginia price list, so the cost comes from a written quote. What moves it is the number of bars, the wall (painted drywall is quicker than tile), whether the studs are where the bars need to go, the bar itself, and any permit your locality requires. Virginia's Livable Home Tax Credit may return part of the cost of a qualifying accessibility retrofit.

Hiring

Who installs grab bars and ramps for seniors in Virginia?

Handyman businesses and home improvement contractors install grab bars, and contractors build ramps. Stairlifts and wheelchair lifts need a contractor with Virginia's accessibility services specialty. Any job valued at $1,000 or more needs a Virginia contractor licence. Your local Area Agency on Aging is the place to start for help finding services, and some localities require a permit even for grab bars.

Troubleshooting

Why is my grab bar loose?

Usually one of four things: the small set screws that hold the bar to its flanges have backed out, the flange screws missed the stud or were put into drywall anchors, water has softened the wall behind the flange, or the tile around it has cracked. Loose set screws are a two-minute fix; a flange that moves means the bar needs remounting into studs.

Upkeep

How do I check that grab bars and railings are still secure?

Look first, then test. Check each grab bar and handrail for gaps at the wall, rust, cracked caulk or tile and loose covers. Then, standing on solid footing, pull, push and twist each bar and run a hand along each rail, pressing at every bracket. Nothing should move, creak or turn. Tighten what you can and stop using anything that still moves.

Punch Lists

5 answers

How to

How do I make a punch list before closing on a house?

Walk the house room by room with the inspection report and the purchase contract in hand, and write down every item that is unfinished, damaged or not working, with its location and a photo. Mark which items the contract says get fixed before settlement, ask for receipts for that work, then recheck each one on the final walk-through before you sign.

Cost

How much does it cost to have a handyman do a punch list in Virginia?

No Virginia agency publishes a punch-list rate, so the real number is a written quote for your own list. The price depends on how the business charges (hourly with a minimum, per task or by the day), how many items share one visit, materials, the age of the house, and whether any item is electrical, plumbing or HVAC work that needs a licensed tradesman.

Hiring

Who should fix the items on a home inspection report before closing?

Your purchase contract decides who pays: the seller may repair, give a credit, or leave the work to you. Whoever pays, the work itself should go to the right business: a licensed tradesman for any electrical, plumbing or HVAC item, a licensed contractor for larger jobs, a lead-safe certified firm for old paint, and never the inspector who wrote the report.

Troubleshooting

Why does a new house have so many punch-list items?

A new house is finished by many crews on a tight schedule, and its framing lumber keeps drying and shrinking after you move in, which shows up as nail pops, drywall cracks, sticking doors and open joints. Passing the building inspections means code minimums were met, not that the finish is perfect. Most items are cosmetic, and Virginia's implied new-home warranty covers workmanship for a year.

Upkeep

What should I check in my house before the builder's warranty runs out?

Walk the whole house a month or two before the first anniversary, since Virginia's implied new-home warranty runs one year from the date title transferred or you took possession, whichever came first, and five years for foundation defects. Check drywall, doors, windows, floors, trim, caulk, plumbing, heating and cooling, grading and drainage, list every defect with photos, and send the builder written notice with a receipt.

Shelving & Storage

5 answers

How to

How do I hang heavy shelves on drywall?

Screw the brackets or shelf standards into wall studs wherever you can, and where a screw misses a stud use a toggle-style anchor that clamps behind the drywall, sized for the load. Treat the anchor box's number as a test result, not a working load: about a quarter of it is the safe figure. Keep heavy items near the wall and over the brackets.

Cost

How much does it cost to install shelving in Virginia?

There is no official or standard rate for shelf installation in Virginia, so the real number is a written quote. What moves it: how many shelves, the kind of system, what the wall is made of and where the studs fall, how heavy the load is, who supplies the hardware, patching old holes, and whether the job is big enough to need a licensed contractor.

Hiring

Should I hire a handyman to install shelves?

A light shelf screwed into studs is a reasonable job to do yourself if you own a drill, a level and a stud finder. Hire a handyman for heavy bookshelves, floating shelves, plaster, tile or brick walls, high or awkward spots, closet and garage systems, or a whole list of shelves. Built-in lighting needs a licensed electrician, and a job over $1,000 needs a licensed contractor.

Troubleshooting

Why are my wall shelves sagging?

Either the board is bending between its supports, or the brackets are pulling away from the wall. Boards bend from too much weight, too long a span, a weak material such as particleboard, and slow creep over the years. Brackets tip forward when their anchors loosen in drywall. Check which it is with a level before you fix anything.

Upkeep

How much weight can drywall shelves hold?

As much as the weakest of the shelf, its brackets and its fasteners allows. A light self-drilling anchor in 1/2-inch drywall has a safe working load of roughly 20 pounds pulled straight out; a heavy-duty toggle bolt about 60. Screws into studs hold more. Many shelves are rated lower than their anchors, so read the shelf's own maximum and check it over time.

Small Repairs

5 answers

How to

How do I fix a hole in a hollow-core door?

Most holes in a hollow-core door can be patched in an afternoon: trim the torn edges, push a backing of cardboard or paper into the hole, build wood filler up in thin layers, sand it flush, then prime and paint the whole face. If the skin is split across a large area or the door is badly warped, a new door slab is often the better repair.

Cost

How much does a handyman cost in Virginia?

There is no official or standard handyman rate in Virginia, so the real number is a written quote. What moves it: how the business charges (by the hour with a minimum, or by the task), how many jobs you group into one visit, materials, the age of the house, and whether any part needs a licensed electrician or plumber. Compare quotes for the same list.

Hiring

Is it illegal to hire an unlicensed contractor in Virginia?

Virginia's contractor law is aimed at the contractor: taking a job worth more than $1,000 without a licence is a Class 1 misdemeanor, with fines of up to $500 a day. Whether any part of it reaches a private homeowner is a question for a Virginia attorney, but hiring unlicensed clearly costs you protection, including access to the state's Contractor Transaction Recovery Fund and help from the Board for Contractors.

Troubleshooting

Why do small repairs around the house keep coming back?

A repair that keeps coming back usually fixed the symptom, not the cause. The usual causes are water or high humidity, seasonal swelling and shrinking of wood and drywall, a rigid filler or caulk used on a joint that moves, poor surface prep, or a loose fastener. Find which one it is before patching again, and get a pro if cracks keep growing.

Upkeep

What should be on a yearly home maintenance checklist?

A yearly checklist covers safety first, then water and air: test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, check or change the HVAC filter monthly and book spring and fall system check-ups, clean the gutters and check drainage, clean the dryer vent, test for radon, winterize outside faucets before the first freeze, and walk the house for leaks, cracked caulk and peeling paint.

Small Tile Jobs

5 answers

How to

How do I replace a cracked tile?

Cut out the grout around the cracked tile, break it out with a hammer and chisel, scrape away the old mortar, then set a matching spare in fresh thin-set and grout it once the mortar has cured. With goggles on, one tile is a reasonable DIY job. A crack running across several tiles points to a problem underneath, not a bad tile.

Cost

How much does it cost to replace a few tiles in Virginia?

No state or federal source publishes a price for replacing a few tiles in Virginia, so the real figure is a written quote. Most of it is labour and the trip, not the tile. It rises when no spare tile matches, when the floor underneath needs work, or for stone and shower tile. A job over $1,000 needs a licensed contractor.

Hiring

Should I hire a handyman or a tile installer to fix a few tiles?

For one to a handful of cracked or loose tiles on a solid floor or wall, a handyman with tile experience is usually enough. Hire a tile installer for natural stone, large-format or shower tile, many hollow or cracked tiles, or a floor that flexes. In Virginia, any job over $1,000 needs a licensed contractor whose specialty covers tile.

Troubleshooting

Why are my floor tiles cracking?

Floor tiles usually crack because something under them moves: a wood subfloor that flexes too much, a crack or joint in a concrete slab showing through, tile butted tight to walls with no room to expand, or tile set without enough mortar under it. A single cracked tile is often an impact. A crack running across several tiles points to the floor underneath.

Upkeep

How do I keep tile from cracking?

Most tile cracking is prevented before the first tile is set: a stiff enough floor, a crack isolation or uncoupling membrane over problem substrates, full mortar coverage and flexible movement joints at the edges. For tile you already have, keep hard impacts off it, keep the joints at walls and tubs caulked rather than grouted, fix leaks quickly and keep spare tiles.

Tile Repair

5 answers

How to

How do I fix loose wall tiles?

Lift the loose tile off, scrape the old adhesive from the wall and the tile, check that the wall behind is firm and dry, then reset it in fresh tile adhesive and grout after 24 to 48 hours. If the wall is soft, dark or wet, or many tiles sound hollow, call a pro: that is a leak or a failing bond.

Cost

How much does tile repair cost in Virginia?

No state or federal source publishes a Virginia price for tile repair, so the figure that counts is a written quote. It depends on how many tiles, whether a matching spare exists, the tile type, what is behind it and whether the job is tile, grout or caulk. Work valued at $1,000 or more needs a licensed contractor.

Hiring

When is it worth hiring a pro to repair tile?

It is worth hiring a pro when more than a few tiles are loose or hollow, the floor flexes, the wall behind is wet or soft, or the tile is stone, porcelain, large-format or in a shower. One or two tiles on a firm, dry surface are a fair DIY job. In Virginia, work valued at $1,000 or more needs a licensed contractor.

Troubleshooting

Why does my tile sound hollow when I tap it?

A hollow sound means there is an air gap under the tile where the adhesive is missing. It is often an installation shortfall from the start. It matters when the tile is cracked, rocks under your thumb, or sits in a patch that is growing, or when it is near water. A single sound tile can be reset; a spreading patch needs a pro.

Upkeep

How do I keep tile from coming loose?

Keep the flexible joints flexible: recaulk the corners and the line along the tub or counter instead of filling them with grout. Reseal grout when water soaks in, fix leaks and dry wet areas within 24 to 48 hours, tap-test the tile once a year, and reset any single loose tile before its neighbours go.

TV Mounting

5 answers

How to

How do I mount a TV on drywall?

Mount the bracket to the wall studs behind the drywall, never to the drywall alone. Find the studs with a stud finder, confirm their edges, mark the centers, drill pilot holes into the middle of each stud and tighten every lag bolt firmly. Check your mount's manual for its weight, stud size and spacing limits first.

Cost

How much does TV mounting cost in Virginia?

There is no single Virginia price, and we found no dated primary-source figure we could quote. The quote depends on the TV's size and weight, the mount, your wall type and whether you want cables or an outlet hidden in the wall. Get written quotes for the same scope, and note that DPOR says a Virginia contractor licence is required once work is valued at $1,000 or more.

Hiring

Can I run TV cables inside the wall, or do I need an electrician?

Low-voltage cables such as HDMI and coax can go inside a wall without an electrician, and Virginia's building code exempts wiring under 50 volts from a permit unless it passes through fire-rated or smoke-protected construction or a plenum. Power is different: an outlet behind the TV is electrical work for a licensed electrician.

Troubleshooting

Why is my wall-mounted TV tilting forward?

Most often the mount's tilt tension has worked loose, so the TV drifts on its tilt joint. Tighten the tension knob in small steps. If the whole wall plate is pulling away from the wall, or the TV and mount are heavier than the mount's rating, take the TV down with a helper and do not hang it again until that is fixed.

Upkeep

How do I check that a wall-mounted TV is still secure?

Every few months, steady the TV and look at the wall plate for a gap or cracks, push gently on the screen to check it moves only where the mount allows, confirm the safety lock screw is in place, and check the TV is still within the mount's weight rating. If the plate moves at all, take the TV down.
